Motorcycle Repair: motorcycle, yamaha fzr600, motorcycle dealer

Question
Hi mike I am trying to buy a 93 Yamaha fzr600 it won't turn on has low milage vendor says it should be that it needs a valve adjustment how can I know that's the actual problem and If it is do you know how I can fix it myself thank you for the help mike.

Answer
Geo, if this is a private sale you should not buy it or any other bike unless you hear it running first. The fact that it may need a valve job is not a valid reason as to why a bike won't start and I would be very suspicious of anyone who tries to convince you of this. Bikes that need valve jobs will start up, but they will have a lot of ticking/clattering noises coming from the top area of the motor.

If, however, you are buying a bike from a motorcycle dealer you should ensure that it has a thorough safety check and that everything is working first before you spend your money. Any reputable dealer will have done the things like valve jobs before offering it for sale and will also offer some sort of warranty on used bikes (one to three months is normal).
