Motorcycle Repair: 79 cb125s carb help, adjustment screw, initial adjustment

Question
Hello,

I have a '79 CB125S that I am working on. Someone before me has worked on this and I think thats the carb is not set right at all. I took it apart and cleaned it and put it back together. My book says that the air adjustment screw is to be turned out 1 1/2 turns. But I can't seem to find a setting for the idle for the initial start up. The idle adjustment at the top of the carb seems to be turned most of the way out and I am assuming that isn't right. If you could please help me out with this, I would greatly appreciate it.

thanks,
Jim

Answer
Jim, there is no initial adjustment setting for idle screw. The cable adjustment is to take up the free play in the throttle cable.  You need to back the idle screw out to make sure the slide is all the way down and then adjust the cable adjustment so there's about 1/8 inch of freeplay in the cable.  That's so the cable is not used to control idle speed.  That cable length can change a little when you turn the handlebars from extreme right or left which could cause the engine to speed up.

Then you turn in the idle speed control screw until the engine idles at about 1200 rpm or what ever feel comfortable to you.
