Motorcycle Repair: 1986 Honda TRX 350 atv, honda 4 wheeler, mile fron

Question
First of all thanks for taking the time for my question. I have a 86 honda 4 wheeler trx350,recently I was riding and lost fuel to the carb, of course this had to happen a mile fron home. I removed the fuel line from the carb and nothing was comeing out when Id crank it over, checked fuel filter...it was ok,noticed i wasnt hearing the buzz from the fuel pump, checked fuses all good. after rigging a gatorade bottle with a hose I gravity fed it long enough to get home. So...now i droppped 140 bucks on a fuel pump and now it will start ok but if you give it any gas at all it dies.Ive changed plugs, thought maybe i fowled it but same result. There is fuel coming out of the fuel pump but doesnt seem like much to me.This bike is a generally very dependable bike any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Tom, I don't do much with ATV/ATCs, but I looked at the microfiche at

I see you have a fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel lines, fuel filter, fuel cap in the system.

Start at the beginning....  Is the fuel tank contaminated with dirt, rust or other residues? Does the fuel cap vent properly, so you don't have a vacuum lock in the fuel lines? Is the fuel filter clean/replaced?
Is the petcock plugged up? Has a fuel line collapsed or deteriorated?

Have you removed the carburetor to see if there is contamination in the float bowl, plugged or restricted jets or float valve blockage?

Make sure you have a good voltage source to the fuel pump. If the battery is dying you could be having a low voltage issue which prevents the pump from working to full capacity.

That's about all I can think of here. There are ATV/ATC websites with forums for asking questions and researching common problems.

Good luck with it... there is a reason... go find it! :>)
