Motorcycle Repair: problems in the primary chain 1997 heritage, heritage softail, cluch

Question
I'm writing from Italy so, excuse me for my english.Now... about my heritage softail classic 1997..I've replaced the "stock" starter in order to put a chrome one, and I got 4 teeth missed on the clutch pulley(the one hitted by the starer pinion).I replaced the clutch pulley and after 7/8 starts horrible noise come from the primary.I got several teeth missed on the clutch pulley and 2 teeth missed on the starter pinion. At that point I replaced starter pinion and cluthc. I've put the stock starter back again a new pinion and a twin cam clutch, but , checking the starter without primary cover.. the pinion doesn't come back, is it because this kind of clutch need to rotate, in order to push the pinion inside,or there is something wrong???? Unfortunatly here in Italy everything regarding harleys cost a bomb and I've already spent more than 1000 dollars in starter and cluch. What can be wrong on my bike?? I ride with no stress for the engine, the bike is almost stock I only changed carburator(mikuni) cams, lower kit and weel(18").No works on pistons head or trasmission. The bike has 35000 miles.
Thanks Mike!!

Answer
The jackshaft probably doenst go back because it rides on a bearing in the primary cover, and with riding on that bearing it probably binds.
Before you changed the starter, did you have a problem? Were the teeth missing when you removed the stock starter or did it happen after installing the new starter?
