Motorcycle Repair: shifter play, change gears, bushings

I have a 1998 fxsts that has quite a bit of play in the shifter. I have been told that the primary will have to come off and the bushings replaced. Should I get this done or can it wait until later to do it? How will it affect the bike if I wait to get it done later?

Check the shifter arm on the linkage at the trans. It is probably worn and needs replaced. It is attached to the shifter shaft coming out of the trans. If you wait to long it will start slipping and then you cant change gears.
in order to replace it you would have to remove the inner primary.
