Motorcycle Repair: gaskets, gasket material, cbx 1000

Question
Let's pretend I have a CBX-1000 (I think my question applies to all types of motorcycles, but correct me if I'm wrong).  I am replacing the crankcase side cover gasket, which was leaking.  Surfaces are now clean and dry.  Replacement gasket is a black composite material (typical gasket material, but not rubber).  Should I install the gasket dry?  Use sealer?  What do you suggest?  Thanks.

Answer
Yes the CBX has those ;-)   Anyway, if the gasket mating surfaces are clean and match well, I have used these dry without any problems.  WHen the bikes are assembled, they are put on dry.  If there are any imperfections, either on the cover or on the cases, I sometimes use hylomar to make them seal properly, but even then only minimal amounts.  If it is a British Bike, it doesn't matter what you do because it will leak anyway...

Hope this helps,  Jan
