Motorcycle Repair: Seal behind magneto Honda cm250 1982, rear axle nut, drip down

Question
QUESTION: I bought cm250, left-hand engine case was removed. I was told the seal was leaking. but job dropped when owner couldn't remove magneto.
Q: Do I rent a wheel puller, pull out seal with sharp pointy thing, put new one in...Do you have experience or advice on this. Is it harder than what I just described?

ANSWER: Sorry it taken so long Peter, my wireless router quit working last week. You can use the rear axle to pull the flywheel.  It has the same threads.  You'll have to figure out how to hold the engine from turning while you put torque on the flywheel.  If I were going the work, I would take the rear axle nut to some place like fastenall and get a bolt with the same threads and then use it to pop off the flywheel.  That way I could use the rear brake to keep the engine from turning.

Once you get the flywheel off, you could pry out the old seal but be very careful when putting the new seal back in.  Use plenty of grease in the bore and on teh rim of the seal.  Honda would expect the crankcases to be split to replace this seal.  It's highly likely that you will peal the rubber off the outside of the seal when you try to drive it in the bore.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Hi Rich
Follow up on that wheel puller. This thing is a bi#%h!, I bought a bolt from home depot, used the break to hold the wheel and it just doesn't want to move. I'm thinking rust? Last night I sprayed rust breaker on the back of the shaft hoping some will drip down the shaft. I am worried that I will put too much stress on the bolt and strip out the treads on the shaft. If I do get the magnito out, how do I removed the stuff behind it. I have a manual but it doesn't cover the removal. I hope it just comes off after the magnito is off. So far, I thank you for your help. It's an old bike and needs lots of work. I have always been lucky with mechanical things but I have no experience with motorcycles. She wants me to restore it.

Answer
Peter, first, the bolt should be a large diameter bolt something like 19-24mm right?  The bolt will be threading into the flywheel treads and not the end of the crankshaft. Once you get it good and tight, try wacking the head of the bolt with a steel hammer. It should pop right off.  I'm pretty sure it's not rusted.  That's a sealled cover.   If you are trying to get to the stator windings, those are in the left hand crankcase cover and you don't have to take the flywheel off to get to it.
