Motorcycle Repair: transmission slipping, clutch, gears

my friend has a 2001 1200 harley and heres the problem...when he starts out from a start its fine soon as he shifts to second and all other gears with clutch it only revs up like not in gear  but is still in gear not jumping out, but if he drives it hard it will work like its suppose to  if he shifts without clutch no problem all gears are there can you help him? ty Barry

I suspect an improperly adjusted clutch. Something is preventing the clutch from engaging after the shift is made and the lever is released... does your friend notice a large amount of free play at the lever afterwards?

Check the cable routing to make sure nothing is causing it to bind. If he doesn't have a service manual he should get one, as it details the right way to adjust the clutch.

Also make sure he's using the correct type and level of primary fluid, as too much of it or the wrong type will cause the clutch to slip.
