Motorcycle Repair: Golwing 1200 charging problem, home mechanic, goldwing 1200

Question
Hi, I have a 1986-7 goldwing 1200 interstate, I need to replace the stator as I had a charging problem it runs ok when I don't use the lights but once I but the lights on it slowly drains the battery, I've replaced the battery with a new one and still the same problem, I checked what voltage was coming from the stator at the plug near the casing and each three wires was reading different voltage so I was told the stator will need replacing, the plug for the wires was black and crispy due to getting hot, so I replaced the connector but still have the problem. As you know I need to take the engine out to replace the stator, is this a big job I do have some mechanical knowledge.

Answer
Martyn, it's a fairly big job.  It's not impossible for a home mechanic to do it with just hand tools.  You'll want to invest in a manual and ask a few friends over to help lift the engine out when you're ready for that step.

Avoid drinking too much beer when doing this job...trust me!
