Motorcycle Repair: URAL charging system, ural tourist, battery terminals

Question
I have 1995 Ural Tourist. How can I check the alternator and voltage regulator to make sure they are good? Where can I get a good wiring diagram for this bike?

Answer
You'll need to purchase a multimeter to check the voltage from the alternator. You do that by starting the bike and placing the leads on the battery terminals, you should see 13-15V while the bike is running and 12V when the motor is shut off. If you don't have a multimeter, start the bike and look at the headlight while someone else revs the motor - it should get brighter every time the throttle is twisted, which means the alternator is working.

You might want to consider upgrading to the Denso alternator and coupler, it's pricey but unlike the Russian made unit on yours the Denso will not self destruct and take out the timing gears with it.

For a wiring diagram, you can try asking that question on the official IMZ factory forum. They have a tech section there for 2003 and earlier models: http://imzwa.secureforum.com/
