Motorcycle Repair: cl350 oring or not, cl350, o rings

Question
i am in the middle of an piston and ring replacement on a 1970 cl350.did th ring job and have gotten the cylinder base on (with o'rings at the bottom of the long cylinder studs).now i am about to put the cylinder head on so i check my clymer book and they remind me to be sure and place the dowels correctly and put in new o'rings............are there to be o'rings between the base and head? and if so where .....around the dowels? any words of wisdom you may have would be welcomed about this or any world experience with these bikes. cheers earl

Answer
No, there are no o-rings around the dowels between the head and cylinders.  On later models they had o-rings but not that year.  If the headgasket holes around the dowels fit close around the dowels it doesn't need o-rings. If there's about 1/8 inch clearance around the dowel pins the headgasket is a later model gasket and needs an o-ring.
