Motorcycle Repair: Wiring, inline fuse, fuse panel

Question
I was always told that if you add electronic accessories to your motorcycle that you shouldn't go directly to the positive battery post with the wires. I was told you should go to a fuse pannel.  I was also told that if you had several accessories to add another fuse pannel instead of having several hot wires going directly to your positive battery terminal.  Is this true and why?

If you add electronic items to your bike without going off a fuse then you are taking a chance, if the item shorts out, of frying your wiring. If you are adding alot of items you can always install a inline fuse, then you wount have to add another fuse panel
