Question
QUESTION: Hello
I have a problem with my Honda CM400 83"
... when it is in nevtral, rear tire turns so hardly... and it feels like the gears are still turning, but the pistons stay. - and while it is in gear, when i press the clucth, it feels a difference. But when i want to start it, even if it is in nevtral and i press the clucth... while i am starting it (the starter is turning the engine very slowly and hard- although the battery is new)the rear tire still wants to turn... what could cause this problem?  bad clutch?

the other problem is NO spark.... how can i test what is wrong?
Sorry for my bad english heehehe
thanks a lot

ANSWER: Gregor, I'm not sure I understand the problem.  The transmission turns all the time the engine is running so it's normal to have some some drag when the engine is cold that might cause the rear wheel to turn slowly.

The slow cranking is probably caused by a worn out starter motor.  Remove the left side engine cover and turn the engine over with a wrench.  If it turns freely, the slow cranking is proably a bad starter.

The lack of spark can be one of four problems...bad coils, no power to the coils, bad spark units or bad pick ups.

QUESTION: dear Rich

thnx for the advices,
I fixed the problem with sparks.... it was bad wire-problem...
I still have problem with hard turnning of rear wheel, even if the engine is in "nevtral". it gets a little better when i press the clutch, but still turns wery hard and it makes it wery hard pushing the bike around(- i checked the wheel and without chain on, it turns smoothly...)
I tryed your advice by turning the engine over by wrench, and it is very hard to turn it, and the rear whell was turning....so i gues the cranking isnt becouse of bad starter...
I even started the engine, and in nevtral the rear wheel was turning so hard i couldnt stop it.... like the engine would be in gear....and while i was starting it with the rear wheel on the ground.. the bike wanted to move forvard while starting ( and i had pressed clucth and in newtral)

Answer
I think I understand now.  Gregor, the clutch is frozen up.  The friction and metal plates are stuck together. It's possible the clutch cable needs adjustment but it sounds like the clutch is just stuck together.  I've had some luck by riding around a while holding the clutch in.  As the engine heats up the viscosity of the oil between the clutch plates will be reduced and sometimes it will break free.  If it doesn't, you'll have to take the clutch apart and free things up.  Make sure the clutch is correctly adjusted before breaking open the engine to make sure it's not something simple.
