Motorcycle Repair: no neutral switch, honda gold wing, volt ohm meter

Question
rich I have a 1981 honda gold wing a 1100 interstate. I just bought it last fall. My neutral switch light has never worked. The cluth safety switch works. I when trough the manual. but I do not have a neutral switch the hole is pluged with metal. The bolt hole has no threads. Could it be some were else. or did they just forget to put one in that year. There is a light just doesnt work.Plase help.

Answer
There should be a neutral light switch on the inside of the lower front cover.  It's held in with two screws and fits in the center of the shift drum.  You can't see it unless you have taken the front cover off.  It's the cover that is behind the water pump and oil filter.

You can test it easily with a volt ohm meter. It should ground the circuit when the bike is in neutral and open the circuit when it's in any other position.  If that's working, you have something else going on in the harness or in the light socket.
