Motorcycle Repair: Primary chain on a 750 kawasaki, starter clutch, kawasaki 750

Question
I would like to know if there is any adjustments on the primary chain, mine is slipping badly, has hard time even turning over engine, Thank you!

Answer
Mike, While not a Honda question, it is so helpful to have the year and model of your Kawasaki 750 known, if I am to attempt to help you.

Kawasaki made 750 twins, 750 Triples, 750 Fours..... from the 1970s until the end of the last century, from what I know about them.

Reading into your question, what I can, it would seem that the primary chain, which goes from the crankshaft to the transmission is generally NOT in the loop when you are having starter difficulties.

When the starting system is working hard, but not turning the motor over, the STARTER CLUTCH is generally at fault, which is usually a lot easier and cheaper to fix than the primary chain.

Go to a site like www.bikebandit.com and search for your year and model, to view the illustrations of the parts involved. Primary chains on Japanese bikes are generally tensioned automatically and there is no access or method to change the tension. You have to tear the whole engine down and remove the crankshaft so you can loop a new primary chain around it.

Starter clutches are usually mounted behind the flywheel/rotor (at least on Hondas) and once apart, you can replace the roller cup springs which keep tension on the starter hub, as it tugs on the crankshaft.
