Motorcycle Repair: external shift shaft, chain assembly, side foot

Question
Hello, im redoing a 78  sporty ironhead. I,ve done a compleat upper ie. pistons ,rings vales the works, with the help of a local guru(past national climber on a big twin)and he has fallen sick and cant get out any more I have a shift shaft that is buggered up and am not sure if the new forwards with  three screws will work it has a large grove in the middle im a fair wrench How hard is it to change that shaft if i can get one  thank you in advance for your help.

Answer
To change that shifter shaft you will need to first disconnect the battery, now remove the exhaust then the right side foot peg, sprocket cover, chain and sprocket. Then on the primary side remove the shifter arm, foot peg and primary cover then remove the clutch and primary chain assembly. If you've got kick start remove the 2 kicker gears. This should have you looking at the transmission side door, remove the 4 bolts that hold this on. Then remove the side door, the transmission main and counter shafts as well as the shifter shaft will come out at this time. Reverse this to install.
