Motorcycle Repair: sportster speedo problem, magneto, magnets

QUESTION: My uncle has a 97 or 98 1200 sportster. Recently the magneto went out on him. After he got his bike running again his speedo quit working. Could some of the magnets have gone through the motor/tranny and caused it to quit working. I have no knowledge of motorcycles and my uncle doesnt speak english. Please help


ANSWER: Does he have a electronic or a speedo that runs off the front wheel?

Since your bike has a speedo that run off the front wheel then you have a problem with one of the three parts that run it. Either the speedo drive unit is bad, the cable is bad or the speedo itself is bad.
What you can do is disconnect the cable from the speedo. Jack the front wheel up so it offthe ground and spin the front wheel. If the cable doesnt turn then remove the cable from the drive unit and inspect it to see if its broken. If not, the the drive unit is bad. If it turns the cable then the speedo is probably bad
