Motorcycle Repair: voltage gauge pegs, voltage gauge, voltage test

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2004 electra glide classic, the voltage gauge was peging above 16, engine lite comes on, radio, dash board lites go on and off, returns to normal, later does the same thing again. I change the voltage regulator that a mech. told me was bad. what do you think it could be?

ANSWER: Your stator might be shorting out, so do a OHMs test  and a voltage test on it. If you need to know how to do the tests let me know

QUESTION: How do I test the stator Mike? Thank you in advance for your help.
Danny

Answer
First, unplug the regulator. Do a OHMs test from pin to pin on the stator and then pin to ground. You should have OHMs pin to pin and no OHMs pin to ground. Then start the bike and with a AC volt meter test the voltage coming out of the stator. You should get around 60 volts. If the stator fails any of the above tests then its bad
