Motorcycle Repair: 1982 Honda CM450 E, 1982 honda cm450, freeplay

Question
When my Honda is idling, some times it seems to miss a beat, even when I am riding at about 35mph in 4th gear it seems to stumble a bit. I am wondering if the Carbs need to be rebuilt, ALSO some times the Clutch slips in high gear under hard acceleration. I have adjusted the cables to spec. but I was wondering if it needed to be taken apart and cleaned of something...it only has about 14,000 miles on it. any help would be great. THANK YOU, Kene Hyatt

Answer
It could be the plugs need to be replaced or as you said, the carbs could need to be cleaned.  A 1982 with only 14,000 miles says the bike sits a lot and the carbs could be varnished up.  It's not uncommon for an engine to miss once in a while.  If it starts to run poorly, it's time to fix it.  If you have synthetic oil in the engine, it could cause the clutch to slip.  If the clutch is adjusted correctly and has a little freeplay in the lever, the clutch is probably worn out and needs replaced.
