Motorcycle Repair: Fuel Pump Problem, fuel pump relay, blown fuse

Question
QUESTION: My question is this. I bought a 1985 honda shadow vt700c. i have gone through and redone this bike from top to bottom. i have replaced both the subtank and the solenoid and the fuel pump and the relays. but i can not get enough spark to get the fuel pump to work. Any one have any ideas for me.

ANSWER: Ryan, I'm not sure what you mean by "get spark to the fuel pump".  If you run a wire from the positive terminal on the battery to the black wire on the fuel pump does it work?  If it does, you probably have a blown fuse or the relay or the.  If it doesn't the fuel pum pr ground circuit is bad.  Just be careful gas is very flammable and sparks and fuel pumps don't play well together.

QUESTION: there is a wire that goes to the fuel pump. i have put a light to it and it lights up but very faint. it is not enough to power the fuel pump. i tried 2 different fuel pumps thinking it was the pump but nothing so i am getting some electricity but not enough to turn the bike over.

Answer
Ryan, before making any changes you need to charge the battery and make sure it's good. Take a volt meter and measure the battery voltage before testing the voltage at the fuel pump wire.  That wire should have the same voltage as the battery or about 1 volt less.  If that's not the case, you need to check the fuel pump relay and then check the connections.  You're looking for dirty or corroded connections.
