Motorcycle Repair: not running right., blue spark, thegsresources

Question
I have an 86 gsxr 750, when it turns it sounds like not all the cylinders are firing, it kinda sounds like a lawn mower. When i start to ride and go at about 5000 rpm it wants to run right like it gaines power then loses it and then gaines it again, then sll of s sudden it runs fine for sbout a day, then it does it again. i recently had the carbs redone, and cleaned, new batt, new plugs, so i think it might be the ign. coils or the ecu. please help i really want to get it running right, so i can spruce it up with some body work. thank you and hope you can help me.

Answer
It sounds like ignition to me too.

Start by checking for spark by removing the plugs, grounding them and running the starter. If you don't see a fat, blue spark on each plug you will at least know which ones aren't firing.

Your shop manual should have information on how to check the components & circuit. If you don't have a shop manual you should get one - your bike is an antique and you will have a hard time finding a shop that will work on it. The sad fact is that a lot of the mechanics working now are too young to remember bikes this old and aren't interested in learning about them so that they can do a proper job since yours may be the only one they see this year. This means that you will have to do most of your own work, and working on a bike without a good shop manual is just not worth the headaches. (My bikes are from the same era - that's why I fix them myself.)

I recommend that you get two manuals - a Factory Shop Manual and a Haynes or Clymer. That way when you don't understand the explanation in one you will probably figure it out when you have read the other too. If you spend some time on Google you might even find a factory manual available for free download.

I highly recommend joining an online usergroup (discussion forum) such as http://www.thegsresources.com that specializes in bikes like yours. Forums are an invaluable source of information from people who have figured out how to do what the manuals don't cover.
