Motorcycle Repair: Getting bike out of long term storage, suzuki gs550e, long term storage

Question
A friend of mine has a 1980 Suzuki GS550E that has been stored indoors for several years, what things should we do before turning it over? It has less then 5000 miles.
My thoughts would be to replace battery, fog all of the cylinders, anything else?
If all goes well, replace both tires, oil change & filter, flush brake fluid. Any other suggestions?

Answer
Hi Bruce...

I guess it all depends on how it was stored. Was the fuel drained out of the tank and carbs? If the fuel was drained out properly, then you start by putting fresh gas in the tank. Check the existing oil level, make sure there is oil in the motor (do a complete oil & filter change after ensuring the bike runs). Put in a new battery and it may help to also attach a jump box so the new battery doesn't get drained too much in case the bike is hard to start. Pull the spark plugs and squirt a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder. Crank the bike over for 5 seconds at a time, letting the starter rest for at least 10 seconds inbetween. If she doesn't cough and try to start, then CAREFULLY shoot some engine starting fluid into the airbox/airfilter and open the throttle at least halfway, try to crank again. This should get her started. If there was fuel left in the tank and carbs... well then you will need to remove it, flush the tank, clean the carbs and perhaps even the petcock. If the bike starts and runs ok, then you should give it a complete tune-up, making sure to lube all cables and pivot points. Hope this helps and please let us know what happens Bruce... Good Luck!!
