Motorcycle Repair: O5 FLHTCUI oil consumption, poor gas mileage, ngk iridium

Question
I bought an 05 FLHTCUI brand new with a 1550 ST Legal EFI 95" kit with Syn.3 installed by the dealer at time of purchase, the dealer said to break it in the first 500 miles, fairly gently keeping it just below 2000 rpm. using all gears. so I did. the problem is I use 1qt.of oil every 1000 miles. At first,I used to change the oil myself between dealer services at 2500 miles, but quit because I figured adding a qt. every 1000 mile was just wasting money. I now have apprx. 25,000 miles and my extented warranty will expire in Sept. Both dealers in this area just give me the run around saying some bikes use alot of oil. My bike also gets poor gas mileage. was always around 33 miles per gal freeway, then when they add E-10 to our stations here in Oregon it dropped to 25 mpg. I installed some NGK Iridium plug and now I get 36 city to 42 Hiway. but still uses to much oil. What can be the problem? Thanks Ken.

Answer
If you donthave a leak then you are burning oil. There are two places that you can get oil in the combustion chamber. Around the rings and around the valve guides. Since you have seals for the valve guides, i would suspect the rings. the dealers reasoning for a bike using that much oil, I think, is a cop-out. Check with them again and if you get the same answer ask for the number to harley and talk to them about the problem or you can call them at 414-343-4056.
Good luck and happy riding
