Motorcycle Repair: 1983 V 45 Magna Valve Seals Replacement, magna v45, snap on tool

Question
I'm looking at changing the valve seal in my Magna V45 1983. I was wondering if the Valve seals can be replaced with the cylinder head on the bike.Is there a tool you can get to compress the springs.

Answer
Gene, I've seen a snap on tool that can remove and replace the valve keepers without removing the head.  If you put the piston on top dead center and then lock the flywheel some how so it can't turn and then put air pressure in the cylinder so it holds the valves closed. this tool would pop the keepers out with a hammer.

You can get the keepers out with a socket and a hammer by placing the socket on the top of the retainer and whacking the socket sharply with the hammer.  The spring will compress and the the keepers will pop out. The snap-on tool works the same way but it uses a magnet to hold the keepers so you can reassemble the springs using the same technique.  Just make sure you have a rag stuffed in the cam chain hole so you don't loose the keepers inside the engine if you try this.
