Motorcycle Repair: Carb? need help with this, please e-mail me, exhaust pipes, question thanks

Question
I know you are pre 82 Honda guy but I am wondering if you could help with this one ? I have a 1982 cm450c, I have recently turned it into a bobber, I replaced the exhaust pipes to short strait pipes(no muffling and took off the thing that connects the two sides of the pipes and air box) well it runs great, but during acceleration about the time I would shift the bike stutters and slows down and sounds like it is choking out, this is for all gears, but if I don't throttle it up quickly to go the the next gear or turn the throttle further than a 1/4 inch I can shift fine and it speeds up normally just real slow. please send me an email answer as I found your page on google and probably wont be able to find your answer to my question, thanks

Answer
Lamont, the bike is leaning out.  Removing the exhaust increases the air flow and the carbs aren't jetted right anymore. You can raise the needles aobu .03 inches and go up a couple sizes in main jets or you can raise the float level 1.5-2 mm and see if it runs better.
