Motorcycle Repair: Honda Shadow 600, honda shadow 600, cdi ignition

Question
I was riding at about 60mph and the bike just died like it ran out of gas. I checked the gas tank and I had a half of a tank of gas. It will no longer start. What could be wrong with the bike? It didn't make any weird sounds or anything. It just died.

Answer
Kat, it would be nice to know the year of your bike. They have been making them since the 1980s and they do have some different stuff on them now. The mileage showing on the speedometer would be beneficial to know, too, as it relates to the amount of age and wear on components.

I looked up a 2000 model and will show you a reference to what may be causing the problem.

The auto shutoff valve diaphragm may have failed or lost the vacuum hose connection to it. If that happens, you get an air leak and no fuel flow.

You didn't state whether it "no longer starts" is electrical or fuel related. I am guessing that you have full battery power and that the engine turns over with the starter motor.

You could have a dead CDI ignition box, too, so check for spark by pulling one plug and grounding it against the cylinder head, while you crank it over. If you have spark, then you have no fuel.

There is an air cut valve diaphragm on the carburetor, but when it fails, you get backfiring and poor idle, but it will keep running.

Please be more detailed when you are asking for troubleshooting assistance. The history of the bike, repairs and other symptoms are necessary information.
