Motorcycle Repair: voltage gage going wacky, loose wires, highway speed

Question
Mr.Wells,

I have a 2004 Electra Glide Ultra Classic. On a recent ride,I observed the voltage gage steadily moving back and fourth between 12 and 15 volts at 65 mph.At stops the gage would remain at a constant 14.This has never happened before, and the voltage gage usually stays at about 12 volts at idle and 14.5 -15 volts at highway speed.Since then I have had the battery checked and have checked for loose wires. The problem   continues.I suspect a faulty voltage gage to be the problem. How do I go about getting to the back of the gage to
check it's connections and if necessary replace the gage.

Answer
Connect a volt meter to the battery and go for a ride and see if the volt meter does the same thing. If it doenst, then you have a bad gage. You have to remove the front of the faring by removing the bolts at the top and the bolts holding the spotlights bracket on. You also have to remove the headlight assembly, then the fairing will come off and you can get to the gage
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
