Motorcycle Repair: Honda Highthawk S Knocking, connecting rod bearing, honda cb700sc

Question
84 Honda CB700SC Nighthawk S has mechanical knock that increases/decreases with engine RPM.  Has high-mileage (around 50K) with original cam chain and tensioner.  Has good compression in all cylinders.  Knock/mechanical sound goes away under engine/compression braking, then back at idle or under load.  Bike has DOHC with hydraulic valve adjusters.  Could this be anything in the valve train or does it sound like connecting rod bearing?  Trying to avoid splitting the cases.  Any other tests to try would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Mike

Answer
Take a long screw driver and press the handle up to your ear and put the blade on various parts of the engine.  You can pin point where it's coming from and it will indicate what's causing the noise.  It sounds like a rod to me but if you use the technique I describe, it will tell you where to start digging.  If you hear the noise in the cylinder, it could be a piston, if you hear it in the crankcase, it's probably a rod.  If you hear it in the top of the engine mostly, it could be cam or followers
