Motorcycle Repair: 1980 Honda CR80R, pressure pulses, stroke engine

Question
What harm can be done to a 2 stroke engine if it is ran with the entire exhaust system removed? I know on a 4 stroke exhaust valves will eventually be burnt but what damage occurs with a 2 stroke? Also, would the exhaust produce more power?

Answer
You can get dirt in the cylinder and scuff the rings or liner.  The bike won't as run well either because the muffler controls the amount of air and fuel getting through the engine.  It creates pressure pulses that stop the fresh air charge at the right time to keep the fuel in the cylinder.
