Motorcycle Repair: Upper head noise, honda rebel, head noise

Question
I have a 2001 Honda Rebel. When engine is at idle it sounds fine, when running with throttle engaged it does not make noise. But when you let off throttle to slow or stop, it makes a rattling sound until clutch is engaged. It sounds like it is coming from the top of the heads. I suspect timing chain noise. What do you think?

Answer
Michael, you didn't mention the mileage on your bike or any service background. The camchain tension is automatically tensioned.

Be sure you have plenty of oil in the crankcase. Check the valve clearances to see if they are okay or if something has worn drastically.
These engines are 360 firing twins, so have a certain amount of "rattling" to them under some circumstances. Check your oil to see if there is any debris or particles floating around in it. If so, then deeper inspection will be required.
