Motorcycle Repair: Motorcycle oil follow up, cams and followers, sliding friction

Question
What are the differences between Honda Motorcycle Oil 10W30 and SAE Motor Oil 10W30 that we get from the auto parts store? I mean, besides a brand name, what is it that we are looking for gaining from one rather than the other. I've read that I need about 0ne US quart with each oil filter change that is performed once every 3000 to 4000 miles, or once a season and the end of the season. What else am I missing?  Any reason why I should not attempt to  do this myself?

Answer
Kurt,  the base price and performance of the oils are all about the same.  It's the additive package the manufacturer puts in is what makes the differences in the oil's performance and price.  They're are a number of different formulations that can be added based on what the particular engine needs.  For example, different additives improves the sliding friction like between the cam and follower.  An engine with a roller cam would not benefit from the slider oil additive and an oil designed for one engine may not work quite as well in another.  It's pretty sophisticated once you understand some of the possibilities.  Most high quality oils will do well in most engines but why take a chance.

My old 85 Sabre had marginal oil supply to the cams and followers so I use the Honda oil in the engine.  I have a VT700 and a CL450 that I use Castrol in because they don't need anything more.
