Motorcycle Repair: 1972 Honda SL70 carburetor issue, honda sl70, fuel valve

Question
Hi rick
I'm trying to resolve a carburetor issue where the engine runs way too rich at idle. The air filter is clean (new), I have cleaned the carb but still have black smoke (rich misture) if playing with the throttle and it does not idle by itself. Would you have some specs on proper jets for each of the operation mode along with the float height.
Any idea of what I should check next ?
Thanks
Sylvain

Answer
I'd start by just lowering the float level.  Sorry but I don't have a manual for that bike so I can't tell you what the float level should be.  Try running the bike with the fuel valve shut off to confirm that it cleans up as you lower the float level.  If it helps, I would lower it a millimeter at a time.
