Motorcycle Repair: 98 honda 300ex, crank case, oil consumption

Question
i have excessive oil coming out of the breather tubes, i just bought it and haven't changed the oil filter yet, but i have to add oil because it won't stay in i don't think it's too much oil, because every time i check it its low. it blows a little smoke out the exhaust. if it's crank case pressure caused by bad rings can i stall replacing them by putting a breather on it?

Answer
Joe, my experience is with older pre-82 honda but it sounds like you have excessive ring or liner wear causing oil consumption and blow up past the rings. You can run the bike as long as it's not too objectionable but you won't correct anything with just adding a breather.  If it's something other than ring wear like a cracked piston, it could grenade your engine.
