Motorcycle Repair: stator cover, stators, stator

Question
Jim,

I need to change out the stator cover on my 2001 Honda CBR929RR due to some minor rash. Is there anything I need to know? What sits behind it, and is there any oil or liquids that would be loose once the cover is removed? Never done this before. Thanks.

Phil

Answer
First drain the oil from the bike. The stators are usually sitting in oil to cool them. Have something handy to catch any drips and a towel to clean any spills. The cover will come off with the stator on it and a the wiring so have a small surface handy to lay it on while you unscrew the parts from the old cover. Pay careful attention to how the stator fastens on to the cover so you can duplicate on the new cover. You probably should apply blue loctite to any screws in the cover (not the screws to fasten the cover to the crankcase - those you will torque down to the spec'ed torque). You will probably need a new gasket.
