Motorcycle Repair: 91 fatboy charging system, ac volts, stator

Question
I have a 1991 fatboy the battery just went dead on.I charged the battery and did a test on it and it is good. how do I check to see if the regulator is good or if the alternator is working properly?

Answer
First, at the battery, start the bike and see what the voltage is whne running at around 2000 RPM. You should be getting about 13.5 volts. If not then shut the bike off and unplug the regulator. t the stator plug do a OHMs test on each pin to ground. Should be no OHMs. then do pin to pin. You should have OHMs. Start the bike and at the stator plug you should have about 60 AC volts at 2000 RPM. If the stator down not pass the above then its bad. If it does then the regulator is bad
Good luck and happy riding
