Motorcycle Repair: cbr250r oil leak from bolt, drain bolt, luck david

Question
I own a 1989 CBR250R MC19.
Recently i have been leaking oil from the drainage bolt approximately a teaspoon a day. I am sure it is coming from around the bolt because i've wiped it clean then fired it up and it appears to be dripping from around that area. I've had a full service and tune 2000kms ago at 25k km service. It would be much appreciated if you could assist me before i take it to the mechanics and get ripped off again.

Answer
Hi David...

Here's what I would do... drain the oil from the engine, and wait for it to stop dripping. Next, I would inspect the drain bolt and the washer (if equipped with one). Next, wipe the hole clean and look carefully around it. Look to see if there are any small cracks in the engine casing around where the drain bolt goes in. Next install the drain bolt and tighten it to the proper torque level. I am not familar with a CBR250R, as I don't think they sell those here in the States, so I don't know what the torque setting is for your bike. But what you are looking for here is if the bolt or the hole threads are stripped. If the engine casing around the drain hole has no cracks, and the drain bolt tightens down and is not stripped, then I would say the drain bolt washer is to blame... and if it doesn't have one, get one and that should solve the problem!! Good Luck David and Ride Safe!!
