Motorcycle Repair: Shifting question, honda magna, vt700

I have a 1985 Honda Magna VT700.  When I start the bike and downshift to first gear it it kind of goes "clunk." Also, I have found that when downshifting to first gear it sometimes pops back into neutral.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.  Greg

Clunky shifting is normal if the bike is cold or if the oil is a bit heavy causing the clutch to stick. Popping out of gear into neutral is possible if the clutch dogs have worn out. Check the condition of you clutch cable and make sure it has correct slack (1-2mm) at the lever.
