Motorcycle Repair: How to confirm the model # Honda CM450E?, salvage title, model honda

Question
My dad is learning about his first motorcycle, a used Honda which he purchased from a friend in early July. Since then, he's ridden it to and from work about three days each week, racking up 2000 miles in the last three months.  He's concerned about not hearing if the engine is lugging at high speeds on a limited access highway when wearing a full helmet with wind noise.  And he thinks the clutch has worn so that it slipped and doesn't completely get out of gear when he goes to start it in first gear. Also, he's hearing a jingling noise when the clutch is in at high speed, and the cycle is coasting down to a stop.

But now, he's beginning to wonder if he's got the right model number for the cycle, which was a salvage title. No owners manual, no maintenance manual or record!  He was told the cycle is an 1982 CM450E with "1 down, 6 up" like that was unusual for a Honda. Where do we look on the cycle to confirm that we've got the model and year correct?

I would think that would be the starting point, right?

Answer
Linsey, I think I just answered some of the same questions from your dad.  The model number can be found on the head stock of the frame.  You will see a tap riveted on the headstock. If that's been removed, you will find a serial number stamped into the frame and it will start with a CM something if it's a CM.  The shift pattern was always one down and the rest up for subsequent gears.

I answered the noise question in the last e-mail.

Good Luck
