Motorcycle Repair: starting problem Raptor 350, continuity tester, clutch lever

Question
Hi,

I have been getting a lot of grey hairs lately due to my strange problem with my Raptor 350 2006. Runs perfectly when towed to start but when using electric start there is no spark on the plug.

Answer
Hi Jonas and sorry for the delay in answering. Ok, before you wind up totally gray, I think we can get ya running again. It is hard to diagnose electrical issues thru an email, but thanks to the info you provided, I think we can solve this. Although I have only worked on one Raptor in the past, I think your problem is located in either the clutch interlock switch (located at the clutch lever) or the neutral light safety circuit. Most bikes and ATV's have certain safety interlocks that keep the bike from starting or running if for instance the clutch is not pulled in and the bike is in gear. ATV's and mopeds sometimes have a safety switch on the brake system that disables the ignition system at startup unless the brake is applied. If one of these safety switches is bad, it can cause problems that seem baffling. You will need the service manual for your bike, as it will tell you which switches your model has and where they are. With the aid of a manual and a continuity tester, you will easily be able to find the offending part. Hope this helps you out... let us know if ya need more help.
