Motorcycle Repair: clutch, hydraulic clutch, ring seals

Question
I have a goldwing 1985 gl1200i, 30000 miles.Bike has been sitting for awhile before I bought it.Took it for a run, going up a steep hill, come to give it gas, rpms. went up but bike didn,t move.Had to work my way down the gears, each time giving it gas but with the same result. When I stopped the bike, I released the grip slowly, but bike would not move even with given it gas. After about an hour or more, was loading bike onto trailer, bike was running so put it in gear, and clutch engaged. Was able to drive the bike into the garage. Clutchs are not something i'm familiar with, any ideas before as to what to expect in repairing .

Answer
Randy, the clutch is slipping.  It has a hydraulic clutch that may be holding pressure or the plunger is sticking.  I'd start by taking the master and slave cylinders apart and give them a good cleaning.  You will probably find a varnish like material behind the o-ring seals that are binding up the piston in the slave cylinder.  I usually have to scrap it out with a bent nail or something...it gets that hard.  Once things are nice and clean again and the system bled, things should work correctly.
