Motorcycle Repair: wiring problem honda cb 550/4k3 1978, honda cb 550, ground terminal

i was wondering if u could help please there is a green/yellow wire next to the air filter lid which is on top of the frame the wire has a ring on it under a screw i thought it was a eath wire so i connected it to the red on the battery and frazzled the wire but did not blow any fuses and took it of have u any idea what this wire is as i cannotwork out where it goes it shows in the wiring diagram green and yellow for stop switch and lights but can see any brakes in the wiring can u please help

Green and yellow is the brake light wire.  I've never seen one with an eyelet on it.  They is a green wire typically with an eyelet and it connects to the ground terminal on the battery or to the frame as ground.  If you connect that to the positive side of the battery you will have a short and it will burn up the harness...like right now and you'll have a mess to sort out.  There are no fuses in the ground circuit so there's nothing to blow if you connect the ground and positive side of the battery.
