Motorcycle Repair: 1982 cm450a hondamatic Overheating, regulator rectifier, ohm meter

Question
I bought this bike a few months ago as a summer project and have replaced nearly all the electrical system and rebuilt the carburetors. It starts right up every time I push the start button and idles good.  It will ride good for a couple of blocks at full speed but when I slow down or stop it dies and doesn't want to start for a while.  I feel pretty confident one of the electrical components is overheating and thus it won't spark after it heats up.  I pulled a plug to verify this after it died.  I have an extra CDI and it does the same thing with both.  It also does the same thing with a different coil and a different regulator/rectifier.  The only thing I can think of is that the pickup on the stator is overheating.  I replaced mine with a used unit as mine was inoperable. What are the chances of this being true and do you have any other ideas for me? If this is the case, where can I get a new pickup as I have discovered stators almost don't exist for this model. Thanks!

Answer
There's only three part to that ignition system, the pick up, the ignition module and the coil.  You have replaced two of the three so you're guess is probably correct.  You can check the pick up with an ohm meter. It should have somewhere around 460-480 ohms.  You can check it warm and cold to see if something is opening up.

Good luck
