Motorcycle Repair: bad green wire from starter relay to solenoid..., novice questions, volt system

Question
Hi Mike.
My 99 night train wouldn't start. Lights and all work fine. Did the voltage check on starter relay. red/black connect made 12 volts, but green wire made 0. Jump wire on solenoid got a turn over. My thought is that the green wire is bad. The thing runs a mile through the harness and would be a major pain to redo. Can I do a short reroute of the green wire from the starter relay down to the solenoid on its own and put some shrink wrap on it? I'd like to put a starter switch on the solenoid as well as a back up.

Two other novice questions:
What does it mean when the term wire open or open wire is used?
What does it mean when someone says a wire is grounded or has ground?

Thanks a ton.
Dave

Answer
Yes, you can reroute the wire. Just make sure its not contacting anything hot.
Wire open means the wire is not grounded. Wire grounded means the wire it touching somthing metal and is grounded. Either way, in a 12 volt system, the part that is suppose to work will not.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
