Question
Bill I have a problem with my 500 , it's bogging out when opening throttle ,  I purchased the bile two months ago , and I have driven it about 500 km ,  no riding weather in atlantic canada this year ...  the bogging started yesterday on my way to work , I was entering the highway by on ramp and when I open the throttle the bike boggd out

the bike has some blow off in to the airbox , but i have been draining , the airfilter is clean.

I was told the bike was tuned when I purchased it . I have not taken out a plug but they look new from the outside

what do you think ?

Answer
Paul, a 23 year old bike can have a lot of problems and possibilities for things to go wrong.

You need to determine if you are losing half of your ignition system. Pull the spark plugs and see how they look on the inside. If your pulser coils in the alternator are going off, you could be losing one coil or the other. There are 4 plugs, so they work in pairs. Check the spark plug caps for 5k ohm resistance values, read the plugs to see if they have been firing or not.

You could have problems with fuel delivery from one carburetor and/or petcock blockages, fuel filter issues, fuel pump (I think they have one) working intermittently. The ignition module could be dropping one coil set. If you are getting a lot of blow-by into the air box, the rings are worn out and need replacing. The plugs could be oil fouling, fuel fouling or not getting fuel or spark.

If the carbs have rubber diaphragms on the top, controlling the throttle slide, then you have to inspect them for tears or holes.

Basically, you have to start at the beginning...
Compression test, clean fuel system, carbs that are all functional, spark at both coils and all spark plugs clean and not shorted out, spark plug caps all good, pulser coils functioning, Ignition module functioning and all associated wiring connectors checked for clean tight connections.
