Motorcycle Repair: Removing carburaters, honda v45 magna, air inlets

Question
I have bought a 1984 honda v45 magna with 700cc engine. It has a gas leak at the main inlet tube going into the carburaters. I am trying to remove the carbs to see where it is leaking. Do the carbs and airbox come off as one unit? Can I take them out without messing up the throttle cables?

Answer
Lynn, I had to fix a similar fuel line leak from the fuel pump line to the carb rack. You have to carefully remove the screws for the lower half of the air box, then it will lift off and away. Put some paper towels or rags down the air inlets, so you don't drop the air box screws down the intake tract. A good pencil magnet would be a handy tool to help manage the screw removal and installation.

There are two side screws on the carb rack that locks the carbs in place. Removal of the screws allows for the carbs to flex apart, slightly, allowing the removal of the air box plate more easily. Unless the leak is a fuel connector o-ring, the carbs should stay in place, if at all possible.

On the VF1000R I worked on the rubber fuel line had different diameters on each end, so we had to use some automotive fuel fittings to change the fuel line sizes to match up.

The throttle cables do not need to be disturbed, unless you are pulling the carbs off completely.
