after putting in new cam chain how do i set position of cam in relation to top dead centre. regards Rob

What model are we talking about?  In general, the cam will be in a position where both valves are closed and there will be a reference point on the cam sprocket like a scribed line that will line up parallel with the top of the cylinderhead.  Sometimes the screws are the reference and they will line up parallel to the head deck.  The references change with the model.
