Motorcycle Repair: 1982 Yamaha RD350LC - fuel questions, stroke twins, yamaha rd350lc

Question
I know you're a Honda guy, but thought I'd give it a shot. I've got 2 issues:

1) I've notice that some black fluid, I'm guessing oil is blowing out of my
pipes and dripping down the underside - is this a fuel mix issue ?- its auto
inject

2) After the bike has been sitting for a few days and I try to start it, I've
noticed fuel dripping out where one of the pipes attaches to the engine. Is it
flooding in one of the carbs, because it's also very hard to start when this
occurs.

Thanks for your time

Answer
Blair, yes I am a Honda guy... 4 strokes, specifically.

I have some passing knowledge about Yamaha 2 stroke twins, gained from friends who have had them.

For question #1: Black fluid is probably a mixture of unburned fuel and injector oil. Could have carburetor problems, or it could be normal for that model. Depends on what the spark plugs look like. If they are all black, gooey and wet, you probably have some carb issues and/or oil injection problems... maybe the pump is set too rich on the oil delivery side. If you were experiencing some head gasket issues, coolant would start burning in the cylinders and you would get some white smoke coming out all the time, plus the engine would start overheating fairly soon.

If you were only getting excess oil from one side, then it may be possible that the crankshaft seal on the transmission side is failing.

Q2: Fuel dripping out of the carburetor float bowls, indicates that the float valve is not seating properly, either due to wear or misadjustment of the float level.

Even though these things don't have valves and cams, they are very sensitive to tuning and setup issues. Have a qualified tuner go over the bike to be sure that everything is to specifications and adjusted properly.
