Motorcycle Repair: Carb Isssues,, honda shop, slide valves

Question
Hi Rich,
3 weeks ago I got a 1971 honda CL175K5. Knowing that its  posable that it doesnt run, Due to the fact that it had no keys & and sat for 25 years, So, I drilled out the locks (ignition & seat lock) replaced the batt, and it crancked over! it had no gas in the tank or carbs so I added gas, then noticed that the there was no spark, so I cleaned the points & it started right up & drove it around a little it ran nice but I found out it wasnt running on both cylinders,& the leftside carb was not delivering gas ,so I quickly cleaned the float bowls with carb cleaner then it was racing real bad so I checked the slide valves on each carb, they are in sync, I removed the carbs & cleaned & inspected the floats even removed them & noticed that someone had changed the float bend tag on one of the floats. but dont Know witch one is factory set, anyway I reinstalled the carbs & replaced the fuel lines replaced the petcock screen but also added extra fuel filters. One for each line But noticed that the lines do not stay solid with fuel, & ordered a OEM float to find out witch float is factory set, the reason for adding fuel filters was because I saw rust in the tank but flushed it out, so how can i  terminate this problem?

Answer
Sorry Armond, which problem do you want to talk about?  First the factory floats won't come preset.  It requires a gage to set the floats correctly.  I don't have a manual for that bike so I can't tell what the setting should be.  I might eb able to find it out on line or you can make a quick call to the honda shop and they can tell you.

The racing is either the carbs are letting in too much air or the timing is too advanced.  Does the engine speed drop if you back the idle screws on the carbs out? If it does can you find an setting that lets the engine idle at a normal speed?  If it doesn't slow down with the idle screws all the way out, the problem could be in the cable adjustment.

If you can get the idle speed down to normal but the engine slows down and dies, the problem is probably a worn out advance unit.
