Motorcycle Repair: 1978 Honda Twinstar 185T, 1978 honda twinstar, charge battery

Question
Has a rectifier that converts 50 volts AC to 6 volts DC to charge battery. Can I splice in a rectifier from a 1980 (12 volt sys) to produce 12 volts to run some 12 volt 'bling' lights? Hope this question is not stupid.

Thank you
Ernie

Answer
Actually, the rectifier only changes the AC to DC voltage.  The voltage regulator actually controls how much current the alternator puts out to maintain the right voltage.  I don't think you can simply change the regulator to a 12v regulator and get what you want unless there is alot of additional capacity in the alternator.  I've never tried it but I don't think what will work.
