Motorcycle Repair: oil leaking from alternator screw hole, honda cb175, screw hole

Question
Motorcycle Repair: oil leaking from alternator screw hole, honda cb175, screw hole
1972 Honda cb175 (k5)
Hello Bill,
I have a 1972 Honda cb175 (k5) with only 5,000 miles on it. Runs strong, a real beauty. Recently I heard what I believed to be cam chain noise and decided to make the adjustment. When I removed the alternator cover to align the marks on the stator in order to get the pistons at top dead center before making the cam chain adjustment, oil began to leak out of the bottom screw hole. Does this sound like a major issue, or an easy fix? Any words of wisdom are greatly appreciated!

Answer
James, there ain't no fixin' it. That's because the alternator runs in oil, designed that way by the factory.

Make sure that the gasket and the screw o-rings are in good shape when you put it back together again.

When you work on it, put the bike on the centerstand, to lessen the oil loss, reassemble it all when you are done with your valve, camchain and timing adjustments and then recheck your oil level, topping it up if necessary.

No worries, James.... Ride that beauty safely.
